Artist Spotlight: Will Cotton

Over the weekend I went to possibly my favorite museum in Washington, D.C: The American Art Museum & Portrait Gallery. One of the paintings in the top floor gallery of contemporary art caught my eye- a landscape made up of candy, painted realistically and beautifully. The caption card read the artist, Will Cotton and I knew I had to explore more of his work. I would best describe Will Cotton’s art as a magical “Willy Wonka-esque” land with the richness of a Wayne Thiebaud painting.

As it turns out, Will Cotton was the Artistic Director for Katy Perry’s music video, “California Gurls”.  According to Cotton’s website, “Perry approached Cotton with an interest in his work, which subsequently became a central visual reference for the video.” Cotton has also made a number of portraits of Perry in his signature style.
